Christmas Tree Disposal/Drop/Recycling in Greenwich
Monday, December 26th, 2011 By Scott ElwellFor those of you who want to free up some space and get out of the house, the town of Greenwich has opened up its christmas tree drop/recycling/disposal locations. They will be open until the end of January.
Please, for the love of god, only drop off tress that have been undecorated. Last year I dropped off my tree at Bruce Park to see three fully wired (with lights) trees in the pile. Seriously….
Here are the drop off locations:
Bruce Park – from 8am to 4pm by the children’s playground. For those in (Greenwich, Cos Cob, Belle Haven)
Greenwich Point/Tod’s Point – 6am until sunset in the first parking lot across from the Nature Center. For those in (Old Greenwich, North Mianus, Riverside and Cos Cob)
Holly Hill Recycling Center – 7am to 3pm on weekdays and 7am to noon on Saturdays in the yard waste area. For those in (Greenwich, Byram, Pemberwick, Glenville, Belle Haven)
Garden Catering has added “Bill Grad’s Tax Cut-let” to their menu!
Thursday, October 13th, 2011 By BillGradIsn’t everyone’s wish to have a Garden Catering sandwich named after them? As a candidate for Greenwich Tax Collector, I’m proud to announce that Garden Catering Ham Ave location has added the “Bill Grad Tax Cut-let” special to their menu from today through election day, 11/8!

GREENWICH JERK.

So I just dropped off my Christmas Tree at Bruce Park today. In case you are wondering, their Christmas Tree Drop is located by the children’s playground. Anyhow, the town provides several locations (see http://greenwichct.com/2011/01/thing-80-%E2%80%93-recycle-your-christmas-tree/) where we can leave our trees to be recycled. This morning there were maybe 15 trees at Bruce Park; one of them caught my eye.Someone decided to drop off their 14 foot Christmas Tree still heavily wrapped in lights. Seriously? How lazy can you be? I’m not an expert at tree recycling, but I’m willing to bet it’s not great for a chipper to throw in 60 feet of wire and bulbs. I’m not saying that I’m the best recycler in the world (I’ve been known to throw some cans away), but this is plain obnoxious. We have a wonderful town here for all walks of life. Some people move to Greenwich for the wonderful communities. Some people move here for the schools. Some people live in $400k homes, others live in $40m homes. You don’t need to say hi and hug everyone you see, but come on, please be the least bit considerate. There are many areas of Greenwich where you can live in complete privacy (another great benefit) and do as you wish, but if you choose to use the services of the town, please take account of the hard working residents that provide these services. Some town worker is going to have to pull all the bulbs off that tree tonight, while the resident who dropped it off cares less.
THING 53 – Computer Class at the Greenwich Library
Thursday, December 9th, 2010 By Scott Elwell
I’m guessing that if you are reading my blog you know the basics of working a computer, though if you need some more help swing by the Greenwich Library on Thursdays between 3 and 4pm. This is when the Greenwich Library hosts a drop-in class for people that need help with any general computer problems ranging from searching through the internet to problems with Microsoft Word. My heart goes out to anyone that helps people with computer issues. I don’t have the tolerance for working through my computer issues, let alone someone else’s.

THING 17 – Take out the Trash – I’m not kidding, this place is awesome.

THING 17 – Take out the Trash – I’m not kidding, this place is awesome.
Living in Greenwich, CT has many many perks, but one that is commonly overlooked is, yes, access to The Holly Hill Facility (aka. Dump). Maybe I’m getting old and boring, but this is one of my favorite locations/things-to-do in Greenwich. Seriously, the Greenwich Dump is a wonderful joyous happy-place. You can pretty much take anything there and toss it for free. Couches, beds, old exams, old tax returns, drafts to the poems you write your wife every week, clothing that doesn’t fit because it’s too tight large – I’ve tossed it all. The last time I moved I drove a U-Haul up there and started to toss out everything item by item until I realized I could drive the truck directly into the trash pit/dungeon. This place is fantastic; I unloaded the entire U-Haul in 3 minutes by pushing everything out the back.
Don’t worry, I will be bringing up all the big more obviously fun location/events throughout the year, but we are also going to be diving into my favorite parts of Greenwich that are commonly overlooked. Hey, it’s my blog I can do as I want…
Please please speak up if you have any comments or any events/locations that you think I should throw on my list.

THING 9 – Read a magazine or close your eyes
Tuesday, October 26th, 2010 By Scott ElwellTHING 9 – Read a magazine or close your eyes
I’m not staying that I’ve ever nodded off at the Greenwich Library, I’m just saying that it is hard not to in these chairs. I thought about taking a picture of someone in their resting state (there are always a couple), but figured they might not appreciate the internet exposure. The Greenwich Library has about 10 of these incredibly comfortable seats in the quiet section by the magazine stacks. It’s a great place to catch up on work (wireless w/ laptop is beautiful) or just get away from the family/boss/rat race.

THING 8 – Have a baby
Monday, October 25th, 2010 By Scott ElwellI was born there. My daughter was born there. I highly recommend it. The “free” Filet Mignon or Lobster isn’t a bad bonus. Plus you get to drive into the emergency entrance for a good reason…
In all seriousness, the Greenwich Hospital is a fantastic organization. The hospital is a part of the Yale New Haven Health system, which also includes Bridgeport Hospital and Yale-New Haven Hospital. There are 174 patient beds and 32 bassinets. According to the Greenwich Hospital website, over 2,000 babies were born in the Greenwich Hospital over the past year. In addition to serving Greenwich, CT, the hospital also serves parts of western Westchester County. In 2005, the hospital added a 150,000 sq.ft. addition (Olive and Thomas J. Watson Pavilion) to accommodate new treatment rooms, meeting rooms and welcoming space. There are many classes in the hospital to help people with issues ranging from depression to cancer. I attended a class on birth before my daughter was born and felt it was extremely helpful in my preparation. When my daughter was born our attending nurse ended up staying well beyond her shift to make sure we were ok and well taken care of. It is that kind of care and generosity that I have always associated with the Greenwich Hospital.
